Satirical news, served fresh

deslash.nl is a satirical news website for the TU/e. I joined the editorial board, contributing articles and helping shape the voice and direction of the publication.

What satirical writing involves

Good satire requires you to understand something well enough to make fun of it. You have to read the news carefully, identify what is genuinely absurd about it, and then find a way to make that absurdity visible without the whole thing falling flat. Timing matters. Tone matters. Getting it wrong is very obvious.

Working on an editorial board also means collaborating on decisions about what to publish, how to frame a story, and when a piece isn't quite there yet. Those are the kinds of judgements that benefit from a second opinion.

Why it's worth doing

Writing regularly, under constraints, and with an audience in mind is one of the better ways to develop clarity of thought. Satire in particular forces you to be precise, because vague satire is just vague. I find that discipline useful.
